Attention Audio Quality Enthusiasts Today in the mail I got my Snowflake USB microphone from Blue (I bought it for decent quality lecture recording at school), and I am incredibly pleased. It's simple enough for an absolute newbie to use (no driver or software installation, just plug in and record), it works on PC or Mac, and it's a great microphone. Most importantly, it's cheap as hell, at least when compared to other mics of similar quality. Mine cost me $87 Canadian, including shipping. Here's an MP3 version of some demo audio I recorded with it. I'm using nothing not included in the very small box, no fancy software, and I'm in a big, relatively empty room, with a few computer, TV, and cable fans moving, with no sound dampening objects in it like clothes, and an open hallway to the rest of my house. Basically, I set myself up like a complete newbie with no experience or knowledge of audio and hit record. The one downside I see to it is that if you were going to use it for voice over or voice acting, you typically want to be standing up, and the USB cord, because it's designed to just sit beside a desktop or hang from the top of a laptop, is all of a foot and a half long. If I'm not mistaken though, USB extensions are quite cheap. It won't attach to a normal mic stand or boom (although I suppose you could always rig something up with duct tape), but if you're going to a full quality professional setup you're probably not buying a USB connected microphone, and you're not worried as much about price. |
