The Budget DeficitAbout 57 million dollars were raised at the Haiti telethon. That is to be considered a lot, right? To put that in perspective, 9/11 happened 9 years ago; WW2 took place more than 60 years ago; Christopher Columbus 'found' America about 500 years ago; Jesus appeared in some manger 2010 years ago; Lucy, the Australopithecus afarensis, an early ape-like ancestor of modern humans, lived about 4 million years ago; the list goes on and on, but ultimately the longest back anyone can fathom to think is the dinosaurs, and the dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago. 65 million is only 8 million years more than 57 million (ha, only). The American national debt is currently 12.3 trillion dollars. To put that into similar historical perspective, the universe is thought to have began about 15 billion years ago. That is about 14,935,000,000 years before the dinosaurs went extinct and all that other stuff happened. It is hard to imagine how ridiculously long that is, and even then you only have about 1/820 of 12.3 trillion. If we wanted to do a similar Haiti telethon but for the national debt, it would have to take place every day for the next 591 years, that is assuming every time 57 million dollars would be raised. Or, rather, we could have every American (including children) cough up about 40,000 dollars at the same time. Then we just might break even, maybe. And then the next year we would be in another 3 billion dollar deficit, because that is how fast we waste money. TL;DR VERSION: Our budget deficit turned into years is about over nine thousand times more than 'a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.' /rant -Go_Nuts |
