Okay, so I just got a new PC and I installed all the shit along with the hard drive. Now for some reason my brand new optical drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7191A LightScribe) is having trouble reading discs. I tried updating the firmware but it's got the latest version and it appears to be working fine in the device manager.
I have a feeling it's the IDE cable, but i'm using one from my old PC which I had no previous problems with. I'm using the said cable as the others I have aren't long enough to fit in the HDD AND the optical drive and I only have one IDE slot on the motherboard now.
Does anyone have any suggestions in what I can do?
It will detect the disc and recognise the content but other than that it won't actually access what is on the disc. I have tried several discs. When try and open files it simply won't do it.
I know this is a long-shot, but I had similar troubles when I had my DVD drive shared with a VMWare virtual machine. Any chance you have VMWare installed?

I do have WMWare installed now (Daemon Tools) but it was doing the same thing before I had installed that too.
why did you get an IDE (PATA) optical drive instead of a SATA?
My suggestion is to go buy a new IDE cable that is long enough and change the jumpers on both the HDD and DVD-RW to "Cable Select"
I didn't actually buy the drive seperately it came included with the kit I bought. I've tried setting the jumper to cable select and it still doesn't work. This was without a new cable, however. I am going in to town today for work and I will buy an IDE cable on my lunch break.
You should really use two different cables, if you have enough IDE ports on your motherboard. You will significantly reduce the speed of your hard drive by putting it on the same channel as an optical drive. At the very least, make sure the hard drive is set to master and the optical drive as slave.
I tried doing that as well and it didn't work. I only have one IDE port on my motherboard, which is annoying. I'm using my old one currently but what I think i'm gonna do is buy a SATA Optical Drive next month when I get paid. Anyone recommend a good, but also cheap SATA Optical Drive?
